Our chosen charity for 2014 is the RNLI Rock Inshore Lifeboat. Throughout the entire year, for every specially selected dish ordered from the evening menu, and for every specially selected bottle of wine ordered from the wine list, St Moritz Hotel will donate £1 to the charity to help to continue to save lives in Cornwall.
It just so happens that this year the RNLI Rock Inshore Lifeboat are also celebrating their 20th year of ‘raising the bar’! It all began in 1993 when the Padstow Harbour Commissioners approached the RNLI highlighting the need for an Inshore lifeboat to look after the Camel Estuary, previously covered by the Harlyn private rescue service that was no longer in operation. At that time, any incidents occurring inside the Doom Bar were being handled by other local boats. The Commissioners’ proposal was agreed by the Committee of Management in 1993. The D class inshore lifeboat was to be established at Rock, opposite the fishing port of Padstow, on the northern side of the estuary.
20 years of saving lives at sea in Cornwall later and here we are today! To mark this momentous occasion, we played host to the 20th Anniversary charity ball here at the St Moritz. The night kick started with canapés on the lawn on arrival, looking out towards the Atlantic Ocean – Tomato Gazpacho, Beetroot Cured Salmon with Horseradish Mayonnaise and Porthilly Oysters to name a few. The 180 guests were then ushered into the RNLI themed marquee and treated to a delicious 3-course meal created by Jamie Porter and his team, before dancing the night away to live music courtesy of the band, Nine Lives.
A fantastic night was had by all! Congratulations and a big thank you to the RNLI Rock Inshore Lifeboat for 20 years of service. Check out a few snaps from the evening below.
